Is ChatGPT’s New Image Generator Actually Any Good
Much like Ruby Sparks, where a writer’s fictional character comes to life, ChatGPT’s new image generator brings imagination to reality—minus the emotional entanglements. Powered by GPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest model lets users generate, edit, and modify images using plain text prompts. From photorealism and 3D renders to anime and infographics, its versatility feels magical.
We tested it across six creative and business scenarios.
Test 1: We asked for a left-handed businessman writing in an office. While the scene was mostly accurate, the tool struggled with hand orientation—still a common GenAI limitation.
Test 2: A scenic holiday image showcased excellent background detail, but facial features were slightly off. Edits like adding flowers and changing colors worked well, showing promise in refinement.
Test 3: A collage on spatial AI hit the mark, blending robots, AR/VR, agriculture, and retail. Gender representation also balanced out—barely.
Test 4: We tried a “Garfield-style” collage in six art styles. Due to copyright, it created a “humorous orange tabby.” Most styles were spot-on, though pixel art was debatable.
Test 5: We challenged it with a B2B infographic. It nailed layout and icons, but size constraints and inconsistent logo rendering led to imperfect results.
Test 6: For a café leaflet, it asked clarifying questions (a nice touch) and created a relaxing vibe. However, consistency in regenerating logos and layouts over time proved tricky.
Despite limitations—like daily caps for free users and logo inconsistencies—ChatGPT’s image tool is impressive. While pros may still prefer manual design, this tool empowers small businesses and individuals to create visual content quickly and effectively.
So, is ChatGPT’s image generator any good? Short answer: Yes. Long answer: With a little tweaking, it’s a powerful creative companion.
